From historic castles to stunning beaches and world‑class gardens, there's so much to explore near to the Highland Snug. Here are our personal recommendations – many are dog‑friendly and easily reached by car, bus, or even on foot.
Inveraray Castle & Town
🏰 HistoricThe magnificent seat of the Duke of Argyll, set overlooking Loch Fyne. Explore the opulent state rooms, stroll through the beautiful gardens, and visit the town of Inveraray with its jail, shops, and eateries. The castle is open from April to October – check their website for exact dates. The drive alone is worth it! Often referred to as the Scottish home of Downton Abbey.
Benmore Botanic Garden
🌿 World‑class gardensA stunning 120‑acre garden set in a dramatic Highland landscape. Benmore is famous for its avenue of giant redwoods, the impressive walled garden, and a huge collection of rhododendrons and conifers. There are miles of peaceful trails – perfect for a leisurely stroll. The garden also has a refreshment point and plant shop. Open daily from February to November.
Pucks Glen
🌲 Magical gorge walkA short drive from Benmore Gardens, Pucks Glen is an enchanting gorge walk through ancient woodland, with waterfalls, mossy rocks, and a series of wooden bridges. It's a favourite for families and photographers. The path can be steep in places but is well maintained. Combine it with a visit to Benmore Gardens for a full day out.
Mount Stuart
🌿 Gardens & houseOne of the most spectacular Victorian Gothic houses in Britain, surrounded by 300 acres of woodland and formal gardens. Don't miss the kitchen garden, the stunning chapel, and the family art collection. The ferry crossing from Colintraive to Bute is a mini adventure in itself. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the grounds.
Waverley Paddle Steamer
⛴️ Seasonal tripsThe world's last seagoing paddle steamer often calls at Blairmore Pier during the summer. Take a trip on the afternoon cruise (2 hours) up Loch Long to Loch Goil and back. Departures from Dunoon go to Rothesay. It's a magical way to experience the Firth of Clyde. Check the Waverley website for sailing dates and times – and book early!
Blairmore Golf Course
⛳ 9 holesA hidden gem – Blairmore Golf Course offers a delightful 9 holes perched above the village with panoramic views over the Holy Loch and the hills beyond. It's a short, gentle walk from the Snug. The course is open to visitors; just turn up or call ahead. Also nearby: Cowal Golf Club in Dunoon (18 holes) and many others.
Ostel Bay
🏖️ Dog‑friendly beachA beautiful, unspoilt sandy beach for a family picnic on a warm summer day. Enjoy a bracing swim, or letting the dogs run free (please keep an eye on them near the water). The beach is backed by dunes and has views across to Bute. There's a small car park – arrive early on sunny days.
Lochgoil Boat Hire
🚤 On the waterHire a boat and explore the tranquil waters of Loch Goil. Lochgoil Boat Hire offers rowing boats and small motorboats by the hour or half‑day – perfect for a peaceful family outing. Fishing permits are also available. The Loch is surrounded by steep hills, making for a stunning backdrop. Advance booking recommended in summer.
Hill Walking
🥾 Endless trailsYou don't need to drive to find great walking. From Highland Snug you can step straight onto the Shore Road and pick up paths into the forest or along the coast. For more serious hillwalking, the Arrochar Alps are just 30 minutes drive away – including the famous Cobbler. Always check weather conditions and let someone know your route.
📝 Handy tips for days out
- Plan ahead: Check attraction websites for opening times – many close in winter or have limited hours.
- Ferry times: The Colintraive–Rhubodach ferry runs frequently, but check the Caledonian MacBrayne website for live times.
- Dog‑friendly beaches: Ostel Bay welcomes dogs, but some beaches have seasonal restrictions.
- Walking gear: Even on a sunny day, take waterproofs and plenty of snacks. The weather changes fast!
- Bus services: Route 489 connects us to Dunoon, where you can pick up buses to Inveraray and beyond.
- Local information: We keep a folder in the Snug with up‑to‑date leaflets and maps – feel free to borrow.
